I am a South Korean who started fasting according to your book. As I wasn't able to find a doctor or instructor in Korea sharing your methodology, as an alternative I had no choice but to self-medicate and rely on weekly-basis blood tests. I am currently water fasting for 14 days, and I noticed an 0.2 increase in creatinine by a week in my blood tests. My doctor said this result can be highly dangerous as it can be an indicator that damage is beginning in my kindneys. Though my doctor has no knowledge of fasting whatsoever - in fact, in my first session when I told him I was fasting for health reasons he asked me if I was mentally ill! So I must ask you - is increase in creatinine a commonly observed symptom in fasting or does it indicate I should stop fasting immediately? And any other additional personal advice that you can give me on fasting will be nice as I am very limited to information and advice about fasting around here. Oh, forgot to mention, I am fasting to change my lifestyle and eating habits and my aim is 3 weeks, as that felt like a both reletively safe and efficient period. Am I good to fast for another week?
The following are some information about myself that I seem relevant;
Male, age 30;
No known allergies or disease, no priors;
Currently not on any kind of medication/supplements/vitamins etc(any kind of health/medical products);
183cm tall (6 foot);
Overweighted, before fasting 107kg(236lbs), after week 1 102kg(225lbs), after week 2 96kg(211.6lbs);
My main diet was brown rice, kimchi, canned tuna(almost 1 large can per meal), meat or cooked fish. Occasionally pizza and/or fried chicken(1~2 per week) but did not eat snacks/candy/icecream etc;
Smoker(1~1.5 packs/day), drinker(5~6 bottles of Korean Soju/week, about Vol. 20, 360ml per bottle);
And I have been swimming 5 days/week, 1hr/day for 6 months. After fasting I continued swimming very low-intensively in the same pattern. I suspect I should quit smoking during fasting but that was the one thing hard to give up; I am still smoking 1 pack/day.
My blood tests results are attached below. Thanks a lot!

I hope you have quit smoking forever.

First I experienced some improvement in vision - it may have something to do with my liver because in oriental medicine it is believed that the eye is directly connected to the liver somehow.
And I had a knee ligament transplant(not sure what the exact term is) last year - in fact the reason I started swimming is because it was part of the rehab plan. I did constantly feel pain in my knee(especially breaststroke) - but after fasting it seems that the pain has gone away!
Those were the two most unexpected but most amazing things that's happened to me. Then I reminded your story about the iceskating injury - I am now a true believer of the healing powers of fasting! But for now I'll move on to the healthy eating part of your program. Thank you very much Dr. Fuhrman, and I will deal with the smoking problem soon.
